Minute With The Board
International Vice President Kristen Heine Slaughter (Florida State)
Spring is a season of growth and that could not be truer for the impact our volunteers and mentors make across the Gamma Phi Beta sisterhood. I am continually inspired by the countless women who give their time, talents, and hearts to support our sisters, our chapters, and help grow confident women of character.
Volunteers are the steady foundation of our organization. Whether you are mentoring a collegian, advising a chapter, supporting our philanthropic mission, volunteering with a local alumnae chapter or showing up in so many other ways as a volunteer, your presence creates connection and continuity. You show our members what it means to live our values through service, leadership, and lifelong commitment.
Mentorship truly shapes the Gamma Phi Beta experience in powerful ways. I have been fortunate to have many sisters who mentored me through the years. They showed me a path for leadership by encouraging me to serve as Chapter President and then as a College Leadership Consultant, helped me find my professional passion in the non-profit space , and encouraged me to continue to volunteer all along the way, most recently as a Vice President on International Council (IC). They saw potential in me that I may not have always seen and helped shape who I am today- that is the power of mentorship!
As we reflect on April as Volunteer month, we want every volunteer and mentor to know how deeply grateful we are. You are strengthening our sisterhood, advancing our mission, and helping build confident women who will, in turn, pay it forward. Your impact reaches far beyond what you may see — into future leadership, lifelong bonds, and communities made stronger.
Thank you for all you do to make Gamma Phi Beta a place where women grow, lead, and belong.
Our next volunteer spotlight could be you! Throughout the month of April, we’ve been spotlighting our amazing volunteers across our social media platforms. Help us celebrate your hard work by sharing your volunteer story!
Gamma Phi Beta is proud to be the largest NPC donor to the Foundation for Fraternal Excellence’s Amplifying Sorority Campaign. The Amplifying Sorority Campaign exists to provide empirical evidence to what we’ve long known – that sorority is a valuable and transformative experience for our members and our communities. Throughout the campaign, the Foundation for Fraternal Excellence seeks to fund at least ten studies on the sorority experience.
The most recent study examines the role of parents/caregivers in sorority participation. The goal of this research was to deeply understand the hopes, concerns and influence parents have on their daughter’s college journey, including perceptions around sororities, including:
- Key priorities and concerns parents have regarding their daughter’s college experience.
- The influence parents have on college choice and selection, including how affordability factors into their decision-making and perceptions of the collegiate experience.
- How parents’ own collegiate and fraternity/sorority experiences shape their college expectations and sorority perceptions.
- Preferred channels for learning about college and sororities, as well as their experiences around accessing sorority information.
Key insights from the research can be found here. Want to learn more? Join Chief Executive Officer Megan Smiley Wick (Washington State) on May 20th at 6pm MT to learn more about these research projects and their practical applications for your work as a volunteer. Pre-registration is encouraged.
