Nominating Committee Bylaws Proposed Amendment FAQ

As the Bylaws currently read, the term for the Nominating Committee (NC) is two years; however, there has been a proposal to amend the Bylaws at the 2026 Convention to extend the term for NC members to four years. For more information regarding the term and the proposed Bylaw amendments, please click here.

1. How long is the term of service for the NC?

As the Bylaws currently read, members of the NC serve a two-year term. However, there is a proposed Bylaw amendment that, if adopted at the 2026 Convention, would extend the alumnae member term to four years. This means some individuals elected in 2026 will serve two years and some could serve up to four years if the amendment passes.

2. How might this proposal to amend the Bylaws impact the 2025-26 slating and election process?

Alumnae applicants should be prepared to answer if they are willing to serve a two-year term (2026-28) or a four-year term (2026-30).

In the spring, the NC will announce a slate of seven alumnae candidates, and it will indicate if the candidate has been slated for a two- or four- year term. If the proposed amendment passes at Convention, the slate will be considered as announced. If the proposed amendment does not pass, all candidates will be slated to serve two-years.

3. If the amendment passes, what does this mean for future years?

If the term of service for the NC extends to four years, that means that all elected NC members will serve four years beginning in the 2028-30 biennium. Committee members’ terms will be staggered, so approximately half of the committee will be elected each biennium, while some will be serving the second half of their four-year term.

4. What happens if the amendment doesn’t pass?

If the amendment doesn’t pass, the alumnae member role will remain as a two-year term and the entire committee will be elected every two years.

5. Why is there a proposal to extend the term from two to four years?

In 2023, Gamma Phi Beta conducted a governance evaluation with the Sort Sol Group, an external consulting firm. Their report recommended extending NC terms to four years to strengthen leadership continuity and align with nonprofit best practices.

Following that recommendation, International Council (IC) created a Terms of Service Task Force to further review the idea and its potential outcomes. The task force agreed with Sol Sort Group's report that the NC would benefit from greater consistency and institutional knowledge. They recommended extending the NC term to four years, with staggered terms, to achieve this.

6. How does this amendment impact the term of the NC Chair?

This amendment does not impact the appointment of the NC Chair. That role will continue to be appointed by IC each biennium.

7. How does this amendment impact the term of the collegiate delegates?

This amendment does not impact the collegiate delegate term. Two collegiate delegates and two collegiate alternatives will be slated each biennium.
