2006: Progressive Advisor Training
During 2006, Gamma Phi Beta again became a “first” by developing the first online advisor training program in the Greek world. Up to this point, trainings were held at Conventions and Regional Leadership Conferences – now called REAL Leadership Conferences – which meant that advisors sometimes waited as long as a year and a half for formal training. Director of Advisor Development Mary Vanier (Kansas State) worked with Dr. Elizabeth Unger (Kansas State), an alumnae initiate. With her help, Gamma Phi Beta was able to set up a training program through Axio Learning, a project of “Universal K-State,” a not-for-profit corporation held by Kansas State University where Elizabeth was vice provost for Academic Services and Technology.
With the online training program, new advisors could now get their formal training in a timely manner and experienced advisors could update their skills and share their experiences. Self-guided modules cover all areas and instructors are able to communicate with the advisor students through live chat rooms, message boards, email and file uploading. “I am thrilled to see Gamma Phi Beta take the lead in this type of training,” Beth said.
