1970: “Challenge of Change”
The late 1960s and early 1970s were a challenging time for sororities, as the Greek way of life remained a target of misguided criticism. The numbers of women going through rush – now called recruitment – dwindled alarmingly, pledge classes were small and the numbers initiated were smaller yet. Many chapters of Gamma Phi Beta and other sororities recruited new members throughout the year. The June 1970 Convention held in Dallas, Texas, addressed the theme “Challenge of Change,” and one legislative act deleted the section in the Bylaws that required alumnae recommendations as a prerequisite to pledging.
