Shining Seniors

With college graduation looming on the near horizon, many seniors in Gamma Phi Beta look forward to new careers, adventures and experiences in the “real” world. Several years of college study have prepared them to join the workforce, while their years in the Sorority have cultivated self-confidence, leadership ability and a lasting network of friendships to enrich their alumnae years.

The Crescent featured a shining senior from each region in the winter 2012 issue. We had so many outstanding nominations, so we are featuring those that we couldn’t fit in the magazine below. Congratulations to all of our Shining Seniors – we wish you the best and brightest for the future!

Region 1

Victoria Bernardo (Bridgewater State University)
Major: History
Future Goals: To be a CLC for Gamma Phi Beta
Contributions to ΓΦΒ: Chapter president

Victoria shines because she embodies the highest type of womanhood. She is able to be stern while remaining open-minded and approachable. She has worked with her officers to implement effective and useable bylaws and standing rules, as well as scholarship, risk management, healthy life style, budget and crisis management plans. While these documents are required, previously they either didn't exist or weren't being created or worked properly. She has begun to hold chapter members accountable for their actions and makes the hard decisions when needed. She helps to keep Gamma Phi Beta a top chapter on campus and has set the framing and groundwork for future leaders to flourish not only on our campus but within International Gamma Phi Beta.

Thank you to Chapter Advisor Shelby Bukhenik for the nomination.

Norah Isbister (University of Toronto)
Major/Minor: Sociology, French and Human Geography
Future Goals: She plans to work for a year and then do graduate work in human resources.
Contributions to ΓΦΒ: House manager, Panhellenic director of recruitment

Norah shines for many reasons. She is the recipient of Alpha Alpha Chapter's sisterhood award which honors loyalty, friendship and "someone to count on." She can be counted on to attend many chapter events, and as a senior, sets an example for the new members. She participates in the Toronto alumnae chapter’s activities with her Gamma Phi Beta mother.

Norah has been a tireless advocate for the University of Toronto Panhellenic system, and this past year she was the director of recruitment which resulted in one of the University’s most successful recruitment periods. In her previous Panhellenic role, Norah developed the first written public relations plan for the University of Toronto Panhellenic Association.

Thank you to Alpha Alpha House Corporation Board president Grace Lin for the nomination.

Mikaela (Fudge) Kofman (McGill University)
Major: Anatomy and Cellular Biology
Future Goals: Mikaela would like to go to Medical School and become a surgeon. Additionally, she has been targeted for cycling team for the summer Olympics in 2012 and 2016.

Mikaela shines because of the large and unique role she plays in the overall function of her chapter. As standards chair and and parliamentarian Mikaela is very conscious of the rules and procedures of Gamma Phi Beta. She respects their importance and the vital role that they play in the functioning of the organization. She is a very level-headed individual and is not afraid to speak her mind when she feels it is necessary. She very empathic and is always careful to consider the feeling of others before speaking. She is very committed to her career as an athlete but at the same time has been able to focus her attention on her academics. She is a true leader and role model for the others in the chapter, as she can demonstrate how important ambition is but that it can’t be the only thing that drives us.

Thank you to Sofia Quilico and Janet McKelvie for the nomination.

Mary Hannah Stewart (Bentley University)
Major: Information Design and Corporate Communication
Future Goals: Pursue her MBA and work in the nonprofit public relations field
Contributions to ΓΦΒ: Administrative Vice President, Standards Judicial Board member, Song Chair (2010, 2011-current), Assistant New Member Educator (Fall 2009)

There is no doubt that all Gamma Phis are shining stars, but Mary Hannah (known as Hannah) appears to stand out, specifically for her courage and commitment to disability awareness and advocacy on both campus, the Greater Boston community, and her own hometown. Hannah was diagnosed with a learning disability at a young age, but has always made the best of the cards she has been dealt. As a mother, it is difficult to watch your child overcome struggles and challenges that are beyond your control, but Hannah overcame these difficulties with grace, intelligence, and confidence. Despite the stereotypes associated with such a label as “learning disability,” Hannah views her disability as a positive aspect of who she is. The very diagnosis that has challenged her in so many ways, both academically and personally, has undoubtedly created a better human being. Though her disability will never leave her, she has learned to compensate for what most would categorize as a weakness. A disability with the common connotation of negativity has become a source of pride.

In addition to participating in various leadership roles in Gamma Phi Beta, Hannah has held various internships and employment positions over the past four years in order to meet the financial hurdles associated with college. Hannah’s personal goals include continuing advocacy for disability awareness, removing the stigma associated with learning disabilities and serving as a role model for learning disabled youth. For the past four years, Hannah has served as a mentor for elementary school children in the Waltham Public School System identified with learning disabilities through the national program, Project Eye to Eye.

Hannah embraces her full self and, no doubt, Gamma Phi Beta has been an integral part of her development into the fine young woman that I am so proud to call my daughter. She has demonstrated a commitment to self, sorority, and service, as such making her a shining star in her family’s eyes and I respectfully propose a shining star representative of the strong leaders Gamma Phi Beta fosters.

Thank you to Hannah’s mother Beth-Ann Stewart for the nomination.

Grace Dorner (McGill University)
Major: Art History
Future Goals: After graduation Grace plans to move back home to Boston and begin her career working in public relations. Her long-term aspirations are to get an MBA and work in a management or public relations capacity at Children's Hospital Boston. Ideally, she would like to work in conjunction with the family-centered long term care team at Children's.
Contributions to ΓΦΒ: Membership Vice President

Grace stands out in a crowd as a very enthusiastic, articulate, personable and creative individual. Alpha Tau does not have a chapter house, and consequently held recruitment in two different venues around campus this past September. As membership vice president, Grace was able to make the most effective and efficient use of limited resources to create a warm and welcoming environment that made the chapter stand out from the rest. She was also extremely organized and efficient and led very productive membership selection meetings. Under her guidance, Alpha Tau had one of its most successful recruitments, bringing in 19 new members, effectively doubling the chapter's size, not to mention exceeding both Total and Quota.

Thank you to Tina Wong for the nomination.

Future Goals: Her dream is to be a doctor in a children’s hospital.
Contributions to ΓΦΒ: Administrative Vice President

After taking advance standing courses in high school, Alex has fast-tracked her degree in science to finish in three years. Alex has worked diligently in her role both as a leader of the chapter and a mentor to new members. Outside of Gamma Phi Beta, Alex is a varsity athlete who swims on the synchro team competing for McGill at various meets around Canada. In addition to a full class schedule, Alex also volunteers her time to teach swimming to children with special needs.
