National Panhellenic Conference
History
The National Panhellenic Conference was founded on
cooperation and providing the opportunity for every
member group to be successful. The first meeting,
called by Kappa Kappa Gamma, was held in Boston in
1891. Seven women’s Greek letter fraternities were
invited—Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa
Gamma, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta
and Delta Delta Delta. In 1902, Alpha Phi invited Pi
Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma,
Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Delta Delta,
Alpha Chi Omega and Chi Omega to a conference in
Chicago. Alpha Chi Omega and Chi Omega were
unable to attend. However, the seven in attendance
organized the first interfraternal organization. Gamma
Phi Beta is one of the seven founding members of the
National Panhellenic Conference.
Membership
NPC has grown to 26 member groups. All groups
agree to uphold the Unanimous Agreements. These
agreements were developed to promote cooperation
and positive relationships between all groups. They
can be found on pages AU-1 to AU-12 in the NPC Manual
of Information 14th Edition.
Officer Selection
Executive Committee offices are held in rotation based on the year the group joined NPC. All other NPC Committee chairmen are appointed by the Executive Committee. Gamma Phi Beta held the office of treasurer from 2001 to 2003, office of secretary from 2003 to 2005 and the chairmanship from 2005-2007. With 26 groups, the opportunity to serve as an NPC officer occurs every 52 years. Elizabeth “Betty” A. Quick is currently serving as chairman.
