Join http://www.gammaphibeta.org/join en-us Mon, 15 Jul 2013 07:58:23 -0600 Legacy Policy http://www.gammaphibeta.org/join/legacypolicy Gamma Phi Beta Sorority Legacy Policy
Gamma Phi Beta recognizes that legacies are important to our Sorority because they bring a long tradition of pride and support to our Greek-letter chapters. Because it may be impossible for our Greek-letter chapters to pledge and initiate every legacy referred to them, chapters are guided by Gamma Phi Beta's legacy policy: "Legacies are to be given special consideration by the chapters."

Regarding recruitment, this means:
  • It is the chapter's responsibility to show a sincere interest in a legacy and get to know her before a decision is made.
  • A legacy should feel at home in Gamma Phi Beta! She should meet many members and be evaluated—just as any prospective new member—on her potential to embody our Core Values.
  • Legacies are extended an invitation to the first invitational round of events.
  • If a legacy attends a Gamma Phi Beta preference round, she is invited into membership.
Sorority recruitment is a mutual selection process. In the unfortunate situation where there is not a match with a legacy, notification of family is left to the discretion of the legacy to respect her privacy. Our objective is to make recruitment a positive experience resulting in the right home for each potential new member.

The best way to avoid potential disappointment is to discuss the entire interfraternal community and its possibilities with legacies. Because all National Panhellenic Conference sororities have similar goals and ideals, emphasizing Gamma Phi Beta as a sole choice for your legacy may be unfair to her if we are unable to extend a bid.

Volunteer Roles http://www.gammaphibeta.org/join/volunteerroles
As a member-driven organization, Gamma Phi Beta is comprised of volunteers who manage, lead and direct the programs, operations and vision of the Sorority. Below is information on our various volunteer roles and responsibilities.

Collegiate Chapter Advisors
Chapter advisors enjoy a rewarding opportunity to mentor, guide and support our collegiate members. A board of local alumnae motivates and advises each collegiate chapter in all areas of chapter operations, leading them toward future and continued success.

A chapter advisor attends chapter and executive council meetings and chairs the advisory board. Other potential advisors include recruitment, new member, financial, education, public relations, ritual and scholarship.

House Corporation Board (HCB)
Alumnae with talents in facility management, personnel management, rental property or finance are encouraged to serve on their local HCB. HCB volunteers help manage the chapter facility and day-to-day operations of the facility, including meal service, employee relations, maintenance and improvements. It is through their volunteer efforts that Gamma Phi Beta is able to provide chapter housing for its members!

Alumnae Chapter Leadership
Involvement as an alumnae chapter member provides a wonderful opportunity to remain actively involved with Gamma Phi Beta after college! Gamma Phi Betas of all ages are encouraged to join an alumnae chapter and become involved as members, officers and leaders.

Regional Teams
Gamma Phi Beta's eight geographic regions are comprised of regional directors and a team of regional coordinators. Together they provide support, guidance and oversight for our collegiate and alumnae chapters, advisory boards and HCBs, and focus on the overall health and success of a chapter in that region.

Regional directors are responsible for coordinating the support activities and assignments of regional coordinators and for ensuring the successful operations of alumnae and collegiate chapters. Regional coordinators are a chapters' first point of contact at the international level. Specifically, each regional coordinator has the dual function of serving as a small group of chapters within the region as well as serving as a resource for the entire team in a specialized area of the Sorority (i.e., financial, programming, etc).

Sorority Departments
Under the supervision of members of International Council, each sorority department provides ongoing development and support for finance, recruitment, collegiate, alumnae, education and Panhellenic areas. Each department offers a variety of volunteer opportunities at the sorority director and sorority coordinator levels.

Special Projects
Members with specific skill-sets and experience are a great resource for short-term projects and task forces as needed. Task forces generally conduct research while providing their expertise to make a recommendation to the Sorority, usually at each Convention.

International Council
Serving on International Council (IC) is one of the most revered and honored volunteer roles within our Sorority. The outstanding women of IC serve as the board of directors for Gamma Phi Beta and are charged with managing the affairs and property of the Sorority. Voted into office by our membership at Convention, the seven voting members of International Council serve two-year terms.

FAQs for Parents http://www.gammaphibeta.org/join/faqsforparents What is sorority recruitment?
Recruitment (formerly known as rush) is a time set aside once or twice a year for non-Greek women to meet sorority members, learn about our sisterhood and decide which sorority would be the best fit for them. Membership in a sorority is voluntary and is the result of a mutual selection process.

How much does it cost to become a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority?
Each Gamma Phi Beta chapter has fixed expenses including international and local dues, new member fees and housing fees (determined by the chapter). Additionally, there is a one-time initiation fee, and a membership badge must also be purchased. During recruitment a detailed statement of member financial obligations will be provided.

Membership dues fund leadership training, program development, chapter maintenance and a lifetime subscription to The Crescent, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority's magazine.

What is a legacy?
A legacy is a sister, daughter, granddaughter or great-granddaughter of a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, including the "step" version of each of these relations.

What is my role as a parent?
We encourage parents to be supportive and learn as much as possible about Gamma Phi Beta Sorority throughout your daughter's membership. The CrescentGamma Phi Beta's magazine, will be sent to your home address until your daughter graduates - we encourage you to check it out, too! This will give you insight into your daughter's membership experience.

Many chapters have a Parents Club or host a Parents' Weekend, giving parents the opportunity to learn more about the Sorority, meet your daughter's Gamma Phi Beta sisters and tour the chapter facilities. Parents Clubs provide an opportunity for parents to get acquainted and share in some of their daughter's Sorority experiences.

What are Gamma Phi Beta Sorority's policies on the use of alcohol and illegal substances?
Gamma Phi Beta expects its members to obey all federal, state and local laws, while abiding to the Sorority's policies and standards. Gamma Phi Beta promotes the development of friendship and sisterhood in an alcohol and drug-free environment and actively educates our members about risk management, personal responsibility and good decision-making practices.

Gamma Phi Beta also has strict guidelines for hosting social events, with the expectation that chapters always provide a safe environment for members. If policies are violated, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority will take appropriate action and ensure that additional education and appropriate disciplinary measures are instituted.

What are the grade requirements for membership in Gamma Phi Beta?
A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.4 from college or 2.8 from high school is required for initiation by Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Exceptions may be made with approval of the chapter advisor and the chapter's regional coordinator after consultation with the sorority coordinator-scholarship.
(Note: grades are determined at pledging, not at time of Initiation.)

Our chapters are strongly encouraged to set a minimum high school cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 for entering freshmen and a minimum of the all women's or all sorority average, whichever is higher, for other students.

Do all initiated members need to live in the chapter facility?
Gamma Phi Beta Sorority policy states that all initiated chapter must members live in the chapter facility unless:
  • The member is living at home with her parents/guardians
  • University rules prohibit members from living in the chapter house
  • Employment prevents a chapter member from living in the chapter house
  • The chapter house is fully occupied

Start a Collegiate Chapter http://www.gammaphibeta.org/join/startacollegiatechapter
On a campus with an existing Panhellenic, the Panhellenic votes with a unanimous/majority result to invite another sorority to campus. Once the decision is made to invite an organization to campus, NPC notifies the 26 NPC organizations of the opportunity, and necessary measures are taken by interesting sororities to start the extension process.

There are many factors that determine whether a campus needs another sorority including:
  • Number of women not placed during regular recruitment
  • Number of women interested in the Greek experience
  • Housing availability and/or requirements
  • Determining if existing groups are at maximum size
This protocol is based on binding agreements followed by all 26 NPC member groups.

Please contact extension@gammaphibeta.org for more information or clarification, or check out the National Panhellenic Conference website, for detailed polices on the extension process.

We are thrilled you are interested in Gamma Phi Beta Sorority!

Alumnae http://www.gammaphibeta.org/join/joinasanalumna
Start an Alumnae Chapter
Helen Dodge, a Founder of Gamma Phi Beta and the first president of Alpha Chapter, was also the first member to become an alumna of Gamma Phi Beta. However, she had no choice of alumnae organizations to affiliate as none existed at the time.

As additional Greek-letter chapters were added to the sisterhood, women became aware of the bonds of Gamma Phi Beta that existed outside their schools and areas. Women were members first and foremost - for life. At Convention 1892, the concept of alumnae chapters was approved, and the first alumnae chapter, Chicago Alumnae Chapter, was installed.

All of our alumnae chapters offer friendship, career contacts, a support network, leadership training, philanthropic projects and continuing sisterhood. Will our newest Gamma Phi Beta alumnae chapter be coming soon to your city? If you live in an area without an alumnae chapter, you can help establish one!

Contact us via the Contact Us page to get started!

What is the Alumna Initiate program?
Gamma Phi Beta's Alumna Initiate program encourages alumnae chapters to invite women who never joined a National Panhellenic Conference sorority to join our sisterhood.

An alumna initiate may be any woman who meets the high standards of Gamma Phi Beta membership. She may be a personal or work friend, neighbor, family member or university faculty or staff.

Alumna initiates will enjoy new friendships, involvement and opportunities to make worthwhile contributions to the Sorority and their community.

For more information about the Alumna Initiate program, contact us via the Contact Us page.

Interfraternal Resources http://www.gammaphibeta.org/join/inerfraternalresources Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee
For the past few years, fraternity and sorority leaders have been working together to build a positive presence in Washington, D.C., that helps to protect the fraternal experience we offer our members. A logical extension of those efforts is the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC), which seeks to provide financial aid to the campaigns of federal office candidates (House, Senate and President) who support the objectives of fraternity life. Formed on March 1, 2005, the FSPAC enables Greeks to work together to visibly support our brothers and sisters in Congress and those who champion Greek issues. Click here to learn more.

CHIA
Gamma Phi Beta is proud to collaborate with other national fraternities and sororities to encourage Congress to pass legislation to facilitate tax-deductible contributions for chapter housing infrastructure improvement.

The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA) is proposed legislation that would make a simple change in the tax code. This change would go a long way in improving the condition and safety of Greek student housing facilities. Specifically, the bill would allow tax-deductible charitable contributions made to Greek educational foundations to be used for infrastructure improvements and the installation of fire detection and prevention systems in local not-for-profit student housing.

NIC
Founded in 1909, the North-American Interfraternity Conference is the trade association representing 75 international and national men's fraternities. The NIC serves to advocate the needs of its member fraternities through enrichment of the fraternity experience; advancement and growth of the fraternity community; and enhancement of the educational mission of the host institutions. Today, the NIC has approximately 5,500 chapters located on more than 800 campuses in the United States and Canada with approximately 350,000 undergraduate members. Click here to learn more.
