Sprinkler Mandate http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/sprinklermandate

Gamma Phi Beta is taking proactive measures to protect our members and reduce the significant risks related to fire with a mandatory policy passed by International Council:

All facilities owned by the Sorority or by affiliated house corporations with live-in capability are required to be fitted with a fire sprinkler system by December 31, 2015.

Sprinkler systems represent important investments in our members' safety. A great place to begin assessing the need and cost for a sprinkler system is through the resources of MJ Insurance. They have developed the Automatic Sprinkler Toolbox which walks an HCB through each step of the process. Find the resource by clicking here.

Hazing Prevention http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/hazingprevention hazing.png

There is no place for hazing in Gamma Phi Beta. As an organization that promotes respect, self-worth and dignity among our members, we are committed to the prevention of hazing through comprehensive education on the topic. Any form of hazing, whether physical, mental or emotional, is a clear violation of our mission and purpose and is taken very seriously.

The Sorority provides educational anti-hazing sessions through a variety of workshops and activities in our new member and member programming that encourage a healthy, safe and productive Sorority experience.
  • Gamma Phi Beta is a primary sponsor of HazingPrevention.org, a national organization dedicated to empowering people to prevent hazing in college and university student groups. The website offers educational programming, webinars and a monthly hazing awareness newsletter that anyone can sign up to receive.
  • We are a founding sponsor of an anti-hazing hotline that any individual can use to anonymously report suspected hazing incidents (1-888-NOT-HAZE).
  • Gamma Phi Beta is a sponsor of the RESPONSE ABILITY Project and supports its mission is to empower the "Every|Day Hero" in all of us. The primary topic of education used to accomplish the mission is bystander behavior and how students can develop understanding, skills and positive group behavior to be more than a bystander and end hazing.
  • The Sorority promotes participation among our collegiate chapters in the annual National Hazing Prevention Week each September and supplies anti-hazing resources for participation. During this national awareness week, the Sorority simultaneously hosts our anti-hazing social media campaign, "No Hazing Under the Crescent Moon" to address the seriousness of hazing and provide anti-hazing education and resources. Receiving national recognition, this viral campaign has enabled our organization's anti-hazing messages to reach well beyond our own membership, educating Greeks and non-Greeks alike.

How can you begin to make an impact with Building Strong Girls? There are lots of ways! Whether you have a couple of hours a day, week, month or year, there are plenty of opportunities to help build strong girls with one of our philanthropic partners.

Camp Fire has lots of ways to get involved! They can even create a customized volunteer opportunity for your chapter. All council locations, contact information and websites can be found at CampFire.org

  • Support Camp Fire's I'm Peer Proof program by acting as mentors for the program. The curriculum will help you teach girls how to maintain positive friendships while resisting negative peer pressure.
  • Volunteer with camp activities. In addition to the educational resources Camp Fire provides, they also utilize outdoor activities to stimulate environmental education and cultivate an appreciation for nature.
  • Provide camperships. Support fundraising at the local level with philanthropic fundraising events, and complete the Philanthropy Grant Application from the Foundation to enhance the amount raised and make a greater impact.
  • Request a custom volunteer opportunity that best fits your time, talents and resources. Contact Hannah Hasselquist to set up a special volunteer activity or event for the chapter.

girlguides.jpgGirl Guides of Canada
With Girl Guides, you can volunteer in a number of ways that relate to your interests, skill-set and schedule. All province council locations, contact information and websites can be found at GirlGuides.ca.
  • Become a Unit Guider. Deliver programming directly to girls on a weekly basis. Unit Guiders are one of Girl Guides of Canada's most valuable resources.

Rock Solid Relationships http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/rocksolidrelationships RSR.pngMentoring is a valuable tool in providing our members with the emotional and instrumental support they need to achieve their academic, personal and professional goals. Through Rock Solid Relationships, Gamma Phi Beta's mentor training program, we teach our members that through their guidance and encouragement, they can play an important role in positively influencing someone's life, while simultaneously building a meaningful relationship.

With a clear set of expectations for incorporating mentoring into the Big/Little Sister program, Rock Solid Relationships facilitates a strong foundation for the chapter and our members. Members interested in becoming a Big Sister to a new Gamma Phi Beta member must first complete special mentor training in addition to signing a commitment form stating they pledge to serve as a guide and positive role model for their Little Sister. In turn, our new members also receive education on what makes a great mentor - preparing them for this special relationship and what to expect.

As these relationships evolve, Big Sisters offer a sense of consistency and comfort to their Little Sisters, who are usually first-year college students. Joining a new organization and transitioning from high school to college life can be challenging, but through these long-term mentor relationships, our new members receive the support they need to be confident and succeed, while inspiring a greater commitment to Gamma Phi Beta.

Safety & Wellness http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/safetyandwellness safety-and-wellness.pngGamma Phi Beta has created a collegiate officer position, the Safety & Wellness Consultant (SWC), to help teach and integrate personal safety and healthy living education into chapter events and programming. The SWC helps our members learn how to make positive and healthy decisions now, and in the future, by proactively surveying chapter members at the start of the semester with a variety of health and wellness questions to determine current member lifestyles. Using the results from the survey, the SWC works with the chapter's education vice president to develop a healthy lifestyle plan for the chapter, integrating ideas into sisterhood events, chapter meetings and the chapter's overall Risk Management Plan.

Shine Beyond http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/shinebeyond shinebeyond.pngMembership in Gamma Phi Beta is for a lifetime and our goal as an organization is to help our members shine at all stages of membership and life. For many, the time leading up to college graduation or the start of a first job is often chaotic and somewhat stressful. To help our young alumnae members navigate all of life's new and exciting challenges, Gamma Phi Beta created ShineBeyond.org, our online resource for life after graduation.

Organized by our Core Values, Love, Labor, Learning and Loyalty, ShineBeyond.org has rich articles, tips and tools to help our members thrive. From applying to graduate school to creating a stellar résumé to remaining philanthropically involved, the website contains guidance for many new phases of life. When members are in their final semester of school, they participate in our Senior Celebration where they are introduced to our Shine Beyond program and welcomed into an alumnae chapter, encouraging lifelong participation and service.

History of the CLC Program http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/historyoftheclcprogram

More than 70 years ago, Evelyn Gooding Dippell (Illinois at Urbana Champaign, 1933) set out as Gamma Phi Beta's first traveling secretary. Evelyn's (pictured left) work and travels established the foundation for what has become the Collegiate Leadership Consultant program. An article in the December 1943 issue of The Crescent described, "...this office has been created to facilitate international government since in these days transportation and other difficulties prevent Council members from making their customary visits to chapters, and it is imperative that contacts between chapters and International be maintained."

Although the title and responsibilities may have changed a bit since 1943, the original focus has remained the same: to connect our collegiate chapters with the larger international organization. Since then, more than 300 women have served our organization in this important role. Past CLCs have returned to serve both the Sorority and the Foundation as chapter advisors, international volunteer leaders, International Headquarters staff, International Council members, Foundation Trustees and fraternity/sorority professionals on campuses across the country.

Her visit could not have been more helpful or at any better time. We needed her support and knowledge, and she sincerely made our executive board stronger."
-Lisa, Delta Nu Chapter (Missouri State) president

"Our CLC was very relatable and positive! She recognized the differences that exist between chapters of the same organization and worked hard to tailor her input to the atmosphere of our chapter. She was friendly, kind and did a fantastic job providing constructive criticism and feedback while being very positive about our recruitment process and chapter as a whole."

Our Creed http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/ourcreed Gamma Phi Beta from the past has given
A heritage that makes a fuller life.
Gamma Phi Beta in the present bids
Us strive for lasting values and ideals.
Gamma Phi Beta in the days to come
Will prove that fundamentals can endure.
Therefore we shall embody our lives
The truths that make for finer womanhood.

Once more we pledge a loyalty that means
Adherence to all true and noble things;
A learning that enriches all our days
With magic gold that is forever ours;
A labor that each hour will glorify
The simple, common task, the common cause;
A love that will be strong and great enough
To encompass and to pity all the world.

Our Creed is often broken down into our Core Values, Love, Labor, Learning and Loyalty, and elaborates how members use the ideals of our open motto to enrich their lives.

During an era when women were discouraged from attending college, four bold and courageous friends came together to form a women's society. They bonded together to face adversity and encourage one another's intellectual growth. Now, more than 135 years later, we celebrate the vision and dedication of those women for whom the word "sorority" was first coined - and all who have come since.

Mission
To inspire the highest type of womanhood.

Vision
We will build confident women of character who celebrate sisterhood and make a difference in the world around us.

Guiding Principles
  • We promote lifelong commitment, intellectual and personal growth and service to humanity.
  • We perpetuate our heritage as we commit to the growth of our Sorority.
  • We foster enduring friendships.
  • We advocate ethical behavior, respect, authenticity, accountability and integrity.
  • We aspire to excellence in all that we do.

CLC Program http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/clcprogram Collegiate Leadership Consultants
Collegiate leadership consultants (CLCs) are recent college graduates who travel to Gamma Phi Beta collegiate chapters across the United States and Canada to promote officer, member and chapter success. They provide leadership and training, guide chapters in self-assessment, facilitate workshops and provide information, suggestions and ideas.

CLCs also impart direction in recruitment preparations and processes while fulfilling a critical role in Gamma Phi Beta's expansion activities. As advisors to our collegiate officers in every aspect of chapter life, they work closely with a regional team of volunteers, chapter advisors and other international volunteer leaders to support chapters and new colonies.

Gamma Phi Beta's CLC program receives significant support from the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation - and is particularly grateful to Honorary Trustee Dr. Ruth Andrea Seeler (Vermont) for her special support of the program. A trailblazer for the CLC program, Dr. Ruth funded Gamma Phi Beta's first CLC endowment. The Dr. Ruth Andrea Seeler CLC Endowment annually supports the CLC serving our northeastern chapters.

Philanthropy http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/philanthropy Gamma Phi Beta believes that girls need to be mentally, socially and physically strong to achieve their potential. Our dedication to building strong girls began in the 1920s as Gamma Phi Betas identified a desire to provide underprivileged girls a retreat from their daily circumstances and a place to learn about themselves and build character for facing life's challenges.

Today's girls face more challenges than ever before, making the need for a safe place with supportive mentors even greater. Girls need women in their lives who can help them develop the skills to succeed in life. Gamma Phi Betas are those women! Gamma Phi Beta is proud to partner with national organizations that share our dedication to Building Strong Girls.

Through our partnerships, we provide one-on-one mentoring, supportive group activities and financial resources to help our partners positively impact the lives of today's girls.

Proud Partners

The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

Chapter Facilities http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/chapterfacilities

Living in a facility of Gamma Phi Beta is an integral part of Sorority membership, whether it's a house for 60 women or a dorm floor created for 15 members.

Many chapters of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority have Sorority facilities either owned by the local house corporation board (HCB) or the university. Alumnae who serve as elected members of each HCB manage these facilities. With more than $85 million in property assets, our HCBs oversee a substantial investment.

Responsibilities of the HCB can include:

  • Serving as the landlord for the chapter
  • Employing a house director and other necessary staff
  • Maintaining a safe, comfortable facility
  • Planning for future needs of the chapter

Currently, 47 houses are owned and managed by Gamma Phi Beta house corporation boards. A similar number of boards supervise university-owned facilities including rentals, dorms, lodges, suites and chapter rooms.

Gamma Phi Beta Quotes http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/gammaphibetaquotes Founders
"The first social function I attended in Syracuse was a church oyster supper and there I met two young ladies, members of Alpha Phi and an invitation to join the same was soon extended to me. After due deliberation, I thanked them for the honor but declined. Soon I discovered that there were other girls in just the same position. We drifted together and finding each other congenial, the question was broached-'Why shall we not found a society of our own!'"
- Frances E. Haven Moss (Syracuse), 1912

"There was no Gamma Phi Beta Sorority to pledge the Founders. The honor of wearing the little symbol of loyalty was never theirs, but they possessed something which they would not have exchanged for it - the priceless jewel of sincere friendship and true sisterhood."
- Minnie A. Bingham Willoughby (Syracuse), 1912

"Since the rock is the firmest and most enduring substance, able to withstand the ravages of time, and offering the strongest protection, it seemed fitting that Gamma Phi Beta should be thus founded. Protecting, like the rock, those who enter our fold, a sure help in time of need, enduring to the end time - this is the wish for Gamma Phi Beta from one of the Founders."
- Eunice Adeline Curtis (Syracuse), 1912

In a letter to Frances: "We each realize the position of the last surviving founder will be a trying and difficult one. How little we thought of such things when we organized our beloved Sorority. I almost hold my breath as I realize the position which it holds in the world today, but think how we young, unsophisticated girls toiled, and struggled over our marvelous problems. The success of the undertaking is little short of marvelous."
- Helen M. Dodge Ferguson (Syracuse), 1937

Loyalty
"May we ever be loyal to Gamma Phi Beta, and so to all that is best and truest. For our initiation teaches us the beauty of our sisterhood and the sacredness of our pledge."
- Carlota Roose (Denver), 1911

Sisterhood
"When people ask me, 'You paid for your friends?' my response is always, 'Yep, and I didn't pay nearly enough.' You are forever tied to your sisters by memories, tears and laughter. They will always be there for you. Be proud to be part of the sisterhood -- you are making a difference in someone's life and in the world."
 - Lindsey Cooper (Toronto), 2009

"I have been forever changed because I am a Gamma Phi Beta. I know my sisters still walk beside me always."
- Janine Eggers (Oklahoma State), 2009

Giving Back
"Gamma Phi Beta Sorority's unwavering dedication, enthusiasm and support of Camp Fire USA is unrivaled. Together, they are making memories that will last a lifetime for the youth served."
- Keith Harrison, Executive Director of Camp Fire Greater Dayton Area Council

Benefits of Membership
"Gamma Phi Beta has had a profound influence on my life. From working at camp to serving on the Foundation board, I learned skills that have helped me personally and professionally."
- Judy E. Graham, Ph.D. (Oklahoma), 2009

"After graduation, I applied for one job and the first thing my interviewer said was, 'I was very impressed with your continued involvement with your sorority.' He is now my boss. I received the job over someone who went to the same school, had the same skills and even had the same major, because of Gamma Phi Beta."
- Jaz Wilson (Texas A&M-College Station), 2009

Facility FAQs http://www.gammaphibeta.org/aboutus/facilityfaqs Do all initiated members need to live in a Sorority facility?
Gamma Phi Beta Sorority policy is that all members live in a Sorority facility unless:
  • The member is living at home with her parents/guardians
  • University rules prohibit members from living in the facility
  • Employment prevents a chapter member from living in the facility
  • The facility is fully occupied
It's up to each chapter (not the HCB) to determine its preference for living in or out of the facility. This usually is based on campus norms of other sororities.

What if we don't have enough members who want to live in the Sorority facility?
Most chapters have some sort of merit point policy and members with the lowest merit points are required to live in if the Sorority facility isn't voluntarily filled.

Another way some HCBs handle low occupancy is to charge the chapter (from their dues money) for any unfilled space to meet facility financial needs. Generally the amount is divided among members who do not live in the facility to meet facility financial needs.

Every member should sign an agreement with the HCB first so that they understand living in the Sorority facility is one of their obligations of membership.

Should we collect a local building fund even if we do not have a housing facility?
Yes! The local building fund fee is a one-time fee charged to all new members.

If there is no house or other living facility to support, the amount is relatively small, such as $25-50. The idea is to keep building this reserve in the event that a facility becomes available in the future; the university may decide to build a Greek village or a suitable property may come on the market.

If there isn't a chapter facility, the building fund account is kept separately from the chapter's operating account and is managed by the alumnae, usually the chapter advisor and financial advisor. The account is to be used only for facility-related expenses.

What is the International Building Fund?
Each new member pays an International Building Fund fee of $25. This amount is paid to International Headquarters as part of their first installment payment. The funds are then pooled to become part of the principal of the Loan Fund. This fund can be used to lend money to HCBs who are not otherwise able to obtain financing for a facility project.

What is a parlor fee?
All members of the Sorority share in the costs of maintaining a chapter facility, whether it is a chapter house, university-owned house, suite, dormitory or room. A fee, commonly called a parlor fee, is charged to members for the privilege of using these facilities and associated costs.
