Frances E. Haven

Gamma Phi Beta Founder

“May your badge signify to all around that you stand for the highest type of womanhood. Be cordial, be gracious, be sincere.” -Frances E. Haven Moss, 1904

“The Artist,” Frances "Fannie" Elizabeth Haven Moss entered Northwestern University as one of the first female students, where her father was president. After he was named chancellor of Syracuse University, she transferred there, graduating in 1877 with a degree in fine arts. In 1878, she married Dr. Charles Moss, the man responsible for contributing to the design of Gamma Phi Beta’s membership badge. They had five children, including three legacies; Frances was also the only Founder to have a daughter join Gamma Phi Beta. An accomplished artist, many of Frances' original pastel paintings are on display at International Headquarters.

Frances did the most to extend the Sorority to areas outside the northeast. She was instrumental in establishing Omicron Chapter (Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), and Frances and her husband helped finance the purchase of the chapter house that still stands today. Throughout her lifetime she often contributed articles to The Crescent, and at Convention, the Sorority presents the esteemed Frances E. Haven Award to the Gamma Phi Beta collegiate chapter that has made significant improvements in all areas of chapter life.
