FIRST ALUMNAE CHAPTER CHARTERED
Founder Helen M. Dodge was the first president of Alpha Chapter
(Syracuse) and also the first Founder to finish her studies, becoming
the first alumna of Gamma Phi Beta. However, she had no choice of alumnae chapters to join as none existed at the time.
As additional Greek-letter chapters were added to the sisterhood, members became aware of the bonds of Gamma Phi Beta that existed outside their schools and areas.
Pictured is past Grand President (now called International President) Lindsey Barbee who noted (Denver, 1897), "A student on graduation does not graduate out of the Sorority. She graduates into it."
The concept for alumnae chapters and the procedures for their establishment were approved at the 1892 Convention, with the installation of our first alumnae chapter in Chicago, Illinois.
